Become a Generator

Becoming a generator is a great way to get involved in the statewide effort to increase the magnitude and effectiveness of green power here in North Carolina.

Generators either produce qualified renewable energy certificates (RECs) or carbon offsets.

Renewable Energy Certificates

Renewable energy, or “green power,” is defined as energy that consists of electricity provided from solar, wind, small hydro, landfill methane, animal waste methane, agricultural waste and other biomass resources. NC GreenPower has specific definitions for eligible green power resources that qualify for our program. Projects must meet these eligible requirements. If you would like to become a generator, please review the following information to see where you can help make a difference.

Carbon Offsets

NC GreenPower only supports projects that directly reduce carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. A carbon offset generator is also called a carbon mitigator. The common types of carbon offsets that meet this requirement come from:

We currently have an ongoing open Request for Proposals (RFP) for Carbon Offsets that meet our carbon requirements and are looking to expand our portfolio of projects. We prefer projects located in North Carolina but will consider those in South Carolina and Virginia as well. All carbon offset projects must be measured, verified and tracked in order to be eligible for the NC GreenPower program.

Brokered Bids

This product is an economical and flexible option available to customers who purchase a minimum of $15,000 in RECs or carbon offsets per year. All qualifying resources can be used to supply the demand for the Brokered Bids. Customers have access to our portfolio of projects and can select a portion of a project, an entire project or multiple projects of interest to them that are within their price range. NC GreenPower serves as a broker between the generator and the customer to facilitate an offer and payment through NC GreenPower.

A customer’s purchase of Brokered Bids products may be subject to unique terms and conditions, including the prepayment of fees. In addition, some Brokered Bids customers are seeking Green-e certified or listed RECs. Organizations with RECs and carbon offsets to sell may submit a bid to NC GreenPower at any time by providing information in our Bid Document.
